My name is Pooja Verma and I am 10 years old. I have two brothers and three sisters. My father is unemployed and my mother works in a shop. I am happy to be in a school and I enjoy studying and dancing.
When I grow up, I want to be a police inspector.

On August 19, 2002, construction on the Sulaxmi School for Girls in Lucknow, India was completed. The school opened its doors to 10 girls ages five through nine, and has since grown to 30 girls.

My name is Ragoni Sharma and I am five years old. I have one brother and two sisters. My big sister Saloni and I attend school together. My father is a cook and my mother is a maid.
I hope to be a teacher someday.

The Sulaxmi School for Girls is the only free private primary school in Gomti Nagar with a dedicated staff that has a combined teaching experience of over 20 years. The school educates girls who have absolutely no possibility of ever stepping foot into a classroom. The school’s mission is to keep every child that walks through its doors enrolled in school and learning.
The Sulaxmi School for Girls is:
- Educating girls ages 5 through 12, six days per week.
- Providing all students with a midday meal, books, school supplies, school uniforms and an annual health examination.
- Teaching students to read and write in Hindi and English.
- Preparing students to sit for their secondary school exams.
Local Partners
Shashi Mehta, the school's headmistress, holds a postgraduate degree in English from the University of Lucknow. For almost two decades, she has worked in Lucknow's prestigious private school system, hosted educational workshops, and provided other services to the poor. Surendra Mehta, the school's Administrator, has extensive banking and manufacturing experience. He has held various management responsibilities with the Union Bank of India and Barclays Bank in London.
